The Virgo 3 km interferometer for gravitational wave detection
نویسندگان
چکیده
VIRGO, a French-Italian collaboration located in Cascina (Pisa, Italy) aiming at the detection of gravitational waves, is a ground based power recycled Michelson interferometer, which arms are 3-km-long Fabry-Perot suspended cavities. The VIRGO first scientific data taking has started in mid may 2007 in coincidence with the corresponding American detectors. The optical scheme of the interferometer and the various optical techniques used in the experiment, like the laser source, control, alignment, stabilization and detection strategies are outlined. * corresponding author: Eric Genin, European Gravitational Observatory, Traversa H di via Macerata, 56021-Cascina, Italy. e-mail: [email protected] TOPIC: Application of optical systems in: Environment, geophysics and microgravity

First targeted search for gravitational-wave bursts from core-collapse supernovae in data of first-generation laser interferometer detectors
We present results from a search for gravitational-wave bursts coincident with two core-collapse supernovae observed optically in 2007 and 2011. We employ data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), the Virgo gravitational-wave observatory, and the GEO 600 gravitational-wave observatory. The targeted core-collapse supernovae were selected on the basis of (1) proxim...

The French-Italian interferometric gravitational wave detector VIRGO is currently being commissioned. Its principal instrument is a Michelson interferometer with 3 km long optical cavities in the arms and a powerrecycling mirror. This paper gives an overview of the present status of the system. We report on the presently attained sensitivity and the system’s performance during the recent commis...
متن کاملGravitational Wave Detection by Interferometry (Ground and Space)
Significant progress has been made in recent years on the development of gravitational wave detectors. Sources such as coalescing compact binary systems, low-mass X-ray binaries, stellar collapses and pulsars are all possible candidates for detection. The most promising design of gravitational wave detector uses test masses a long distance apart and freely suspended as pendulums on Earth or in ...
متن کاملDynamics of Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors
This thesis is a study of dynamics of the new laser gravitational-wave detectors. The analysis in the thesis is developed primarily for LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) but can be used for other interferometers such as VIRGO and TAMA. The dynamics of fields in the interferometers are described in terms of difference equations which take into account the light transit t...
متن کاملAutomatic Mirror Alignment for VIRGO: First experimental demonstration of the Anderson technique on a large-scale interferometer
The French-Italian interferometric gravitational wave detector VIRGO is currently being commissioned. Its principal instrument is a Michelson laser interferometer with 3 km long optical cavities in the arms and a power-recycling mirror. The interferometer resides in an ultra-high vacuum system and the mirrors are suspended from multistage pendulums for seismic isolation. This type of laser inte...
